Dedicated AI firewall or integrated WAAP: which scales better?

The practical answer
Neither approach scales better in every environment. A dedicated AI firewall may suit specialized model controls; integrated WAAP can consolidate web and API controls when its AI protections meet your needs. Test coverage, latency, bypasses, policy management and total cost on your own traffic.
Map the paths you want to protect before comparing
Whether an AI firewall or WAAP is easier to scale is not determined by request volume alone. The deployment you need depends on whether you want to handle web and API attacks together at the entry point or evaluate model inputs and outputs individually.
Map user input, retrieved RAG documents, tool responses, model output, and actions on external systems in sequence, then overlay the points each product can actually inspect. Start by not assuming that paths bypassing the entry point are also protected.
Do not limit comparisons to candidates in the same product category
Cloudflare AI Security for Apps is an option for using WAF detection results in rules. Amazon Bedrock Guardrails provides guardrails during model use, and its documentation explicitly states that the prompt attack filter does not evaluate tool results. Compare them with their inspection points aligned: the entry point for the former and model use for the latter.
LLM Guard is another example of a tool that can be embedded in code, but its official repository was archived in July 2026. If you are considering it for adoption, check not only its features but also its update status, dependencies, and your organization's maintenance responsibilities. These examples are not meant to imply that the products all offer the same functionality.
An inspection limit is not a receiving limit
AWS WAF inspects the first 8KB of the request body for ALB and AppSync, and 16KB by default for services such as CloudFront and API Gateway; the latter limit can be configured up to 64KB. For example, if a 24KB body is inspected with the default 16KB limit, the final 8KB is not inspected. If the request is allowed through, the entire request, including the portion outside the inspection range, reaches the application.
Whether an oversized request is blocked depends on the rule configuration. This calculation does not demonstrate that an attack will succeed, but it can inform acceptance tests for applications handling long prompts or attached documents. Enabling detection does not necessarily mean automatic blocking, so check both the rules and their actions.
Measure scalability under near-production conditions
If your existing WAAP covers the required web, API, and AI paths and also meets model-specific control requirements, it is natural to start by testing the integrated platform. Conversely, if you want to evaluate model inputs or outputs at a different point, a combination of WAAP and dedicated controls is an option.
Using the same authorized traffic, compare latency, false blocks, missed detections, log-viewing permissions, fail-open/fail-closed behavior, and operator effort. Include paths that do not pass through the entry point, such as RAG documents and tool outputs, and adjust thresholds based on actual data. From our perspective as developers integrating code analysis into development environments, stopping traffic at the entry point and fixing underlying causes in code, such as issues with permission checks, are separate layers. Assign responsibility for each.
Common questions
Does one platform always scale better?
No. Performance and operating costs depend on workload, architecture and controls; measure them.
Does a firewall eliminate prompt injection?
No. Treat prompt injection as a layered security problem and test the complete application.
